How to Stay Safe When Traveling Egypt and Jordan?

All the countries that feature in our Egypt and Jordan tours are very safe for visitors. Of course, no country is 100% safe, so it is always a good idea take certain safety precautions when you are traveling.

The first and most important one is to avoid dark and unusually quiet areas at night. This is particularly true if you are traveling alone and even more so if you are a woman.

When you travel Egypt and Jordan with us, you are rarely left on your own, but there are a few exceptions. In the evenings, for example, you will be free to head out on your own. Some of our Egypt and Jordan tours also include one or more “free” days. During these days you will also be on your own. For most visitors, sunburn and heatstroke are the biggest risks. Still, if you head out on your own, it is best not to carry any unnecessary money or valuables with you.

We also advise against getting into heated debates concerning religion and/or politics. Lastly, don’t be tempted to buy anything from random strangers if any approach you in the bazaars, souks and market squares. If you do, you will most likely be scammed, or even worse, you could end up getting arrested. Ask your guide for help whenever in doubt.

What to Pack for Egypt and Jordan?

As far as clothing is concerned, when traveling to Egypt and Jordan we highly recommend packing in some thin and lightweight clothes. If you are concerned about sunburn, then it would be a good idea to take long sleeve tops with you. You should also take at least one warm top with you because it can get surprisingly cool in the evenings, and especially during the cooler months (November, December, January, February and March).

We also highly recommend packing in a pair of flat open shoes or sandals, and perhaps a second pair of shoes that are comfortable and suitable for walking. Nearly all of our Egypt and Jordan travel packages include a tour at the Lost City of Petra, and this guided tour includes quite a lot of walking. Last but not least, a cap and/or a wide-brimmed hat is an absolute must, as is a pair of sunglasses.

What to See in Egypt?

In Egypt the highlights are the wonders of Pharaonic Egypt. Best known are the Giza Pyramids and the Great Sphinx. But you will also see majestic ancient temples, impressive tombs and much, much more.

The Giza Pyramids and the Great Sphinx

The pyramids and the Sphinx are undeniably Egypt’s most famous tourist attraction and is included in all our Egypt and Jordan tours. The largest of the three pyramids was built for Pharaoh Khufu and is today known as the Great Pyramid of Giza. It was named as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The other two pyramids belonged to Pharaoh Khafre and Pharaoh Menkaure.  Khufu’s and Khafre’s pyramids were the biggest pyramids ever built by the Ancient Egyptians.

The pyramids and the surrounding area have a fascinating history. Many people once believed that they were built by slaves. In reality, the pyramids were built by willing workers and support workers who lived in a nearby “workers village” that had everything a thriving village would need.

The Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djozer

The Step Pyramid is located in the ancient Saqqara necropolis which is a short drive from Cairo. Djozer’s pyramid was built during the 27th century BC. It is believed to be the very first pyramids ever built by the Ancient Egyptians. By the time the first pyramid at Giza was built, this pyramid would already have been considered ancient. After a long and extensive restoration project that lasted for 14 years, the Step Pyramid was reopened for visitors in March 2020.

Valley of the Kings

The Valley of Kings is another one of Egypt’s most famous attractions which is included in most of our Egypt and Jordan travel packages. It is an ancient royal burial ground located on the West Bank at Luxor. A total of 62 tombs were discovered in the area, including the famous tomb of King Tutankhamen. His tomb was the last tomb to be discovered in the Valley of Kings. It was also the only one which had not been looted in antiquity.

Tutankhamen’s tomb has recently been renovated and is once again open for visitors. The pharaoh’s mummy is also on display inside his tomb, but most of the tomb’s original contents are now on display in the museum in Cairo.

Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut

Queen Hatshepsut was Ancient Egypt’s only real Egyptian female ruler. Her mortuary temple is a vast complex that was carved out of the surrounding rock faces. It is also one of Egypt’s most famous and most visited ancient sites and is considered to be one of the “incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt”. The complex is located just a short distance from the Valley of Kings.

Rock-Cut Temples of Abu Simbel

Like Hatshepsut’s temple, the two temples at Abu Simbel are considered to be incomparable monuments of ancient Egypt. These huge temples were also carved out of a cliff. They were constructed in the 13th century BC during the reign of Pharaoh Ramses II, also known as Pharaoh Ramses the Great. These two breathtaking temples are located roughly 300 km southwest of Aswan.

The larger of the two temples was made for Pharaoh Ramses himself while the smaller one was made for his beloved wife, Queen Nefertari. Both of these temples were moved to their current location from lower ground. If they had not been moved, they would have been submerged beneath the surface of Lake Nasser following the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

If the temples of Abu Simbel are not part of your preferred Egypt and Jordan travel itinerary you can simply ask us to customize your itinerary making sure you get the itinerary of your dreams.

What to See in Jordan?

n Jordan the must-see highlights are of course The Lost City of Petra, The Dead Sea and the Wadi Rum Desert. Other important sights are the ancient city of Jerash and Mount Nebo.

The Lost City of Petra

Also known as the Rose City of Petra, this indescribable rock-cut city is Jordan’s biggest and most famous tourist attraction. Petra is of course included in all our Egypt and Jordan travel packages. The city was founded by a tribe of nomadic Nabatean Arabs who decided to settle in the area because of its proximity to major trade routes. It is believed that they inhabited the area at some point during the 4th century BC, but only began work on their city during the 2nd century BC.

They had established the area as a major trading hub, and this allowed them to accumulate considerable wealth. The Nabateans then invested their wealth into establishing their capital city. They carved this magnificent city out of the cliffs of a long and deep rock gorge.

The Lost City of Petra is undeniably one of the most spectacular and most breathtaking historical attractions on earth. If you haven’t visited Petra, you haven’t visited Jordan.

The Dead Sea

Contrary to what some people believe, the Dead Sea is actually a large lake. It is the lowest place on earth. The Dead Sea’s surface and shoreline are approximately 430 meters below sea level. It is nearly 10 times more salty than our oceans, and one of the saltiest bodies of water on the planet. It is this extreme salt content that makes it possible for people to float so effortlessly on the water.

Mud from the Dead Sea is known to be very beneficial for one’s skin. Cleopatra herself used to use Dead Sea mud to keep her skin looking youthful and radiant. Today, Dead Sea mud and mud extracts are added to a lot of high-end beauty products. When visiting the Dead Sea, many visitors take advantage of the opportunity to float on the water and to coat themselves with mud.

Why Should I Visit the Pyramids of Giza?

The Giza Pyramids are the only remaining monuments of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It is a unique experience to see something that stands for more than 4,000 years and still intrigues people.
